For most of us, our hair is our crowning glory. The average British woman spends £756 on her locks if you include haircuts, products and treatments. But Deputy Home Manager Nicky Williamson has – temporarily at least – sacrificed hers for the greater good.
While residents,
relatives and staff enjoyed coffee and cake at the world’s biggest coffee
morning today, Nicky was centre stage braving the shave. And it was husband
Nigel who expertly transformed her chin-length bob to a neat number two with a
pair of clippers. The proceeds – so far totaling £600 – will go to Macmillan
Cancer Support, as well as the £400 raised by a raffle and the sale of coffee
and cake.
Nicky, who
joined Cedars three years ago after 28 years as an NHS Community Dementia
Nurse, is determined to ‘give something back’ to the charity that provides her
and her family with ‘so much support’. Macmillan nurses have been there while
Nicky’s mother has battled cancer for nine years and they cared for her
mother-in-law who, sadly, died in April. Happily, she was able to attend the
couple’s wedding in March. Three months later, they enjoyed a summer blessing
in the beautiful garden at Cedars, surrounded by family, friends and residents.
“I’ve fundraised
for Cancer Support for the last 15 years,” Nicky says. “But this time my hair
had to go! I‘d like to say a big thank you to Macmillan for all their care over
the years. For my part, I want to give ongoing care and support to residents,
their families and staff who are going through difficult times, and I can do
that here at Cedars. It really is one big happy family!”
