Helping You

Making it Home

When you move in, there is plenty that can be done to make your new home feel like home.

Your room can be decorated according to your choice, and you can bring things with you so that you are surrounded by familiar possessions. We encourage new residents and their families to put up pictures and photographs which are special to them – photographs of your family, friends, or yourself at different times in your life.

We understand that leaving a home where you may have lived for many years can be difficult, particularly if it is a family home which you shared with your husband or wife, or where you brought up your children. If you have been used to living alone, moving into somewhere new can feel a bit overwhelming. Seeing and touching the things we know well, as well as keeping our daily routines, helps us to feel more comfortable and reassured; and will help you to settle in and feel at home.

Surrounding yourself with familiar things is important, particularly if you are experiencing the onset of, or more developed, symptoms of dementia. Photographs, favourite objects and decorations can help people experiencing dementia to recognise their new home if they find themselves feeling lost or confused.

Your mementoes help us, as well. They help us to get to know you, and to become familiar with your life and the people and experiences that are important parts of it. The better we know you, the more we can help you to settle in.

Some people worry that becoming a resident means that they will have to follow a set routine which doesn’t necessarily suit them. When you make our home, your home, we want to know what you prefer, so that we can help you to live each day as you wish to.
