A Life Full of Energy at Cedars Care Home – Joyce’s Story

Joyce has been a much-loved member of Cedars Care Home since 2015, bringing with her a lifetime of character, warmth and energy. Growing up in Southend as Betty Pepper, she spent her younger years performing as a Tiller Girl, lighting up the stage with her talent and confidence.

Later in life, Joyce moved to Suffolk where she and her husband ran a local hardware shop. Life was full and busy, but following the loss of her husband, Joyce made the decision to move to Cedars Care Home in search of companionship and support, especially with her son living in the United States.

Finding Community and Companionship

When Joyce first arrived, she understandably felt lonely as she adjusted to a new chapter in her life. However, over time and with the support of the team, she began to settle in and form meaningful connections with those around her.

Through activities and shared experiences, Joyce has built strong friendships and become a valued part of the Cedars community. Her presence within the home is felt by both residents and staff alike.

Thriving at Cedars Care Home

Today, Joyce is thriving and fully embracing life at Cedars. She enjoys a wide range of activities, particularly Zumba and Tai Chi, where she still shows glimpses of her dancing days. Her energy and enthusiasm shine through in everything she does.

She also enjoys quieter moments, whether that’s spending time in the garden with a good book or tending to the bird bath, ensuring the visiting wildlife is well looked after.

Joyce regularly joins outings into the local community, including shopping trips, and continues to stay connected with the world around her. As one of the longest-standing residents, she has become a real voice within the home, actively taking part in day-to-day life and supporting others.

Her journey is a wonderful example of how a supportive environment and strong sense of community can help someone rediscover joy, purpose and belonging.

“Joyce is an inspiration. Her resilience and determination to remain independent is truly something to admire. Her energy brings so much to life in the home.”

“Joyce has been a cornerstone of our lives for many years - a true friend who feels like family. I’m constantly moved by her adventurous spirit; she is always tucking away newspaper clippings and fresh ideas for me to try, turning every morning into an opportunity for a new discovery." A quote from Debbie Day, Head of Activities.

“Joyce enjoys her weekly shopping trip and never misses a visit to the hairdresser, as she takes pride in looking smart. She even treats herself to a glass of prosecco now and then” Admin Team
